Space and Place

Windows Art Project, Somerville Arts Council

(Somerville, Union Square; September 4-October 4, 2003)

The sculptural form of assemblage offers enclosures—space and place—that become stand-ins for the world we inhabit. Of course, art in general relies on the creation of intentional presentation through the concept and use of the “frame,” but box assemblage—like diorama, architectural models, dollhouses, and certain types of theatre—has a three-dimensional quality that particularly invokes place.

Both “1-9-6-7,” an “image poem” of time and location relative to personal history, and “Ephemeral Lamp,” with its images of transitory history and technology emphasize our own presence and interaction with the world, but also the amorphous passage we make through it.“ Angels on the Head of a Pin” takes a different approach; presenting a number of series of similar but not identical 35mm color transparencies of objects and environments that report other places and other spaces; this work invites an examination of the stories of different space —especially through the mechanism of the unmagnified or non-projected small slide format that demands close scrutiny.

Together, these pieces hope to provide what art in general can do so effectively: a glimpse into alternative worlds that resonate and amplify our own experiences and perceptions of our world.
